Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities to Feed Over 50,000 Men, Women and Children this Thanksgiving
Three-pronged approach makes their outreach the largest local effort
St. Paul, MN - Since 1902, food has been a crucial offering of the Union Gospel Mission. For over 50 years, providing a Thanksgiving feast to those in need has been a priority and continues this Thanksgiving with a three-pronged approach which will feed more than 50,000 individuals. On November 24th and 25th the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) will deliver nearly 10,000 bags of groceries with contents to feed families in need throughout the Twin Cities area. Over 1,000 bags of those bags will be delivered to military families in need in the Twin Cities and surrounding area. With food demand on the rise in the Twin Cities, the Mission expects to see an increase in the number of families that apply for a Thanksgiving meal.
In addition to the bags of food, UGM will cook and serve a Thanksgiving meal to between 250-350 people at the Men's Campus in St. Paul on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will also serve meals to low income St. Paul high rise and senior community homes to feed an additional 1,000 people.
Approximately 350 volunteers will be enlisted for this Thanksgiving effort.
The pickup meals consist of:
· 1 frozen turkey (10 lb average)
· 1 bag of white rice (1 lb or bigger)
· 2 cans of green beans
· 2 cans of peas
· 2 cans of whole kernel corn
· 1 can of cranberry sauce
· 1 can of yams/sweet potatoes
· 1 box of stuffing
· 5 pounds of fresh potatoes
"Hope begins with a meal," said Brian Molohon, Director of Development for the Union Gospel Mission. "Our ministry to hungry and hurting men, women and children comes both with the provision of the food, as well as the spirit in which it is served. When people's immediate needs are met, they can focus on their health and getting help in other areas of life. We're honored to serve our community this way and will continue to offer Thanksgiving meals to those in need with compassion and a spirit of thankfulness."
Nearly 30 churches and businesses are participating in food drives which supply many of the items for this year's Thanksgiving meal bag distribution. The public is encouraged to drop off food at the Men's campus location (435 University Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55130) through November 18.
